The four vessels of the Suffren-class were based on the Duquesene-class, though each was built to slightly different standards as lessons were learned from the preceding ship. Their hull form was sleek and graceful, taking a classic cruiser form. While the Duquesne-class lineage was apparent, the Suffren-class had a much more modern look about them. Armour protection was somewhat better than the preceding class, though speed was reduced as a consequence.
In June 1940 Colbert joined other French ships in Operation Vado, the bombardment of Genoa and Vado in Italy. Following the Franco-German armistice on 25th June the Marine Nationale ceased all offensive operations. Colbert underwent a refit in August at Toulon of the same year.
With the German forces beginning to occupy Vichy French territory and entering Toulon itself in November 1942 the Colbert and the other ships of the fleet in the city were scuttled.
