Two vessels filled the Kriegsmarine's light cruiser Leipzig-class, the Leipzig and Nu?rnberg, which were improved versions of the K-class. Both were torpedoed by the S-class submarine HMS Salmon, as they provided cover for destroyers laying mines along approaches to the River Thames. She went on to become a training ship and once again took up an offensive role in Norway from November 1942 to April 1943 before taking up minelaying duties towards the end of WWII. Nu?rnberg passed into the hands of the Soviet Union after the war's end, being renamed Admiral Makarov.
